A geological civil engineer (University of Liege) keenly interested in the impact of climate change on modern life, Marie Dierckx earned a doctorate in glaciology at Free University of Brussels (Université Libre de Bruxelles -ULB), studying the impact of global warming on the Antarctic ice cap. Her thesis focused on the application of soil mechanics methods to the negative temperature environment and the development of a pneumatic press. Inserting experimentally determined mechanical parameters into large-scale models, she compared and contrasted the models with her experiments. Her doctorate also opened up international opportunities by creating collaboration, notably with Germany and Australia, on developing image processing software.

After these four years of research, Marie Dierckx worked for one year for Méridian, in New Zealand, as an engineer in charge of quality assurance and maintenance of wind farms for power production. This involved analysis and assessment of the state of installations and the drafting of recommendations for supervision, repair and improvement of wind turbines with the aim of managing risks and improving the reliability and efficiency of energy production. She participated in this context in the development of software for the analysis of the daily performance of different wind farms.

In 2014, Marie Dierckx joined 3j-Consult, where she handles projects promoting energy efficiency, mainly in the industrial sector.
